Does Sky's rollover really work?

“Sky says my unused data doesn't expire. That sounds too good to be true — where's the catch, and is it worth switching for?”

Sky Mobile launched in 2016 and took an unusual route: build nothing, rent everything. Every bar of its signal is O2's, bought wholesale, and the company sits inside Sky UK under Comcast. What Sky brought instead was retail cleverness, and it is still the cleverest in British mobile.
Two mechanics do the work. Unused data rolls into a personal bank you can draw down later, spend on extras, or pass between household SIMs. And tiers have historically moved up or down each month without penalty — bigger for a holiday, smaller for a quiet January.
Whether it suits you
If you already have Sky TV or broadband
This is where Sky Mobile stops being ordinary. Television plus broadband plus mobile on one account is where the discounts, bonus data and free SIM offers keep landing, and the household arithmetic becomes hard to beat.
Sky Broadband itself runs on Openreach lines and full-fibre partners — wires, not masts, and completely unrelated to your mobile bars.
If you don't take any other Sky product
Then be honest with the comparison. Outside a Sky household the value is ordinary, and giffgaff or Tesco Mobile will sell you the identical O2 signal for less. Price all three on the same allowance before deciding.
If your usage swings month to month
This is the reserve's real strength, and the reason it beats a simple discount. Quiet month? Resize down and bank the difference. Holiday coming? Draw the bank down instead of upgrading. Teenager burning through their allowance? Gift them data from the household pot.
If you care about eSIM or Wi-Fi Calling
Check carefully first. Sky's eSIM support arrived later than the big networks' and still varies by handset, and Wi-Fi Calling support has historically trailed the landlord's too. “Works on O2” does not automatically mean “works on Sky” — confirm your exact model before ordering.
If you commute through a busy city
Read our O2 postbag, because you will inherit its characteristics in full, including the documented evening slowdown. Rented traffic can additionally queue behind the landlord's own customers at saturated masts. A trial month through your real routine is worth more than any advertised claim.
If you're buying a handset
Sky uses device credit that ends at repayment, settleable early — the same tidy split O2 uses. Swap-style upgrades have historically been offered mid-term; read what happens to the old device balance before agreeing to anything.
The bits everybody asks about
Why signal fails on Sky
The verdict
The rollover is real and genuinely useful, the monthly resizing is rarer still, and device credit that stops is exactly right. Against that: inherited congestion, lagging features, and ordinary value outside Sky homes. Check O2's coverage map first — the landlord decides everything else.
