Will Europe cost me extra this summer?

“We're driving through France and Spain for a fortnight. My last trip ended in a bill I'm still annoyed about. What should I do differently?”

The short answerIt depends entirely on which network and which plan generation you're on. O2 still includes Europe on standard plans; most newer Three and EE plans charge a daily fee; Sky sells passes. Five minutes in your app before you fly settles it.
O2Standard plans still include EU roaming under a fair-use ceiling — alone among the big four.
Three and EEMost newer plans charge daily fees in Europe; some older Three plans and higher EE tiers restore inclusive passes.
Sky MobileDaily passes by band, switched in the app.
EveryoneFair-use ceilings abroad, then per-gigabyte charges. Nothing is unlimited past the border.
If you're going for a weekend
Just pay the daily fee
Two or three days of a daily charge is usually cheaper than the effort of anything else — but check the ceiling anyway.
If you're going for two weeks
Price a local eSIM
Keep the UK line for calls and texts, add a cheap local data eSIM for the trip, and route data through it. Past a few days that comfortably beats daily fees.
If you're going on a cruise
Turn mobile data off
Ferries and ships bill through maritime satellite networks, which spend caps do not cover. This is the single most common source of shocking bills, and it is entirely avoidable.
Confirm the spend cap is on — free, in the app.
Read your plan's roaming screen: daily fee, pass or inclusive, and the ceiling figure.
Longer than a few days? Price a local data eSIM against the fees.
Turn off automatic backups and app updates over mobile data.
Data off at sea, and before boarding any flight offering onboard connectivity.
