Why did my 'next-day' phone take a week?
Answered 16 May 2026 · reading time about 3 minutes
“The website promised next-day delivery and it took six. Nobody could explain why. What actually determines this?”

The short answerNext-day only holds when two things are true at once: the exact model was in stock, and you ordered before that retailer's cut-off. Miss either and you're in the ordinary queue.
In stock plus cut-offBoth conditions, not one. Cut-offs are typically mid-afternoon at large retailers.
Click and collectFrequently same-day where a nearby branch holds the exact colour and storage size.
Pre-ordersBound by launch schedules rather than couriers — no cut-off will beat a release date.
Returns windowDistance-selling rules give online orders a cooling-off period, commonly 14 days, and some retailers extend it.
What to do next time
Check stock, not promises
The banner says next-day; the product page says whether your exact variant is actually in the warehouse. Believe the second one.
The upside nobody uses
The cooling-off period
It is effectively a free trial. Test signal at home and at work, battery through several real days, the camera, and the size in your hand — then decide.
Reader beware: Keep packaging and accessories pristine until you're certain. A returns window is only useful while the box is still returnable.
